Namsos Health Centre is a municipal nursing home in Namsos municipality, Norway, comprising a total area of approximately 9,000 m² distributed across five wings and four storeys. The building complex accommodates 97 nursing home beds and places high demands on safety and reliable operation.
A fire safety report prepared for Namsos Health Centre recommended the installation of an automatic fire suppression system to address identified non-conformities. Due to limited available water supply and pressure, water mist was assessed and selected as the most suitable overall solution.
To ensure professional grounding and a well-documented solution, an OFU project (Public–Private Research and Development project) was initiated, in cooperation between Namsos municipality (client), SINTEF, and Grannes VVS (main contractor). The project was partially funded by Innovation Norway, with the aim of developing knowledge, documentation and decision-making support for the design and selection of water mist systems in buildings. Prevent Systems was selected as the supplier of the water mist system and has, in addition, contributed with technical expertise, professional support and training of installers and design professionals.
Installation of the water mist system at Namsos Health Centre commenced in May 2025 and is being carried out by Grannes VVS. Our low-pressure water mist systems are installed in wings A, B and C, and the work is currently approximately 80% complete. Completion of these wings is planned for the first half of 2026.
An important outcome of the OFU project is the development of a national guideline for water mist systems, published by SINTEF in January 2025. The guideline aims to facilitate easier design processes and increase competence among building owners and consultants considering water mist as a fire suppression solution, providing improved decision-making support for future projects.
